Moisture Meters can be used for wood, Concrete, grain and various other materials and is read in %.

Moisture meters are great to measure the moisture content in bulk solids, liquids and some gases. Some devices use infrared (IR), radio frequency (RF), or microwave techniques to evaporate water from a sample. Others determine moisture content by measuring a material’s conductance, resistance, or capacitance and calculating a corresponding moisture value. Variables measured include relative humidity, absolute humidity, specific humidity, and dew point. Relative humidity is a measure of the amount of water in the air compared with the amount of water the air can hold at a measured temperature. By contrast, absolute humidity is the mass of water vapor in a given volume of air. Specific humidity is the absolute humidity divided by the total mass of the given volume of air. Dew point is a measure of the temperature to which air needs to be cooled in order for saturation to occur. Moisture meters that measure pressure and temperature are commonly available. These specialized devices often include special circuitry or additional probes.

There are several form factors for moisture meters. Many require a secondary device or instrument for data acquisition or the transmission of humidity information. Integrated circuit (IC) chips mount on printed circuit boards (PCB). Benchtop or floor-standing moisture meters include a full casing or cabinet and an integral interface. Handheld units include an integral probe and are designed to be operated while held in one hand. Gauges mount on walls, well, racks, or DIN rails and include an integral display. Both analog and digital devices are available; however, simple light emitting diode (LED) power indicators are not considered to be a display. Video display terminal (VDT) styles include cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors and flat panel display (FPD). Mounted transmitters do not include a display, but provide an integral sensor or probe. Analog current outputs include variable levels such as 0 – 20 mA or 4 – 2 mA. Common analog voltage outputs are 0 – 10 V and ±5 V.

A Digital Flame Photometer is a precision analytical instrument used to measure the concentration of specific metal ions in a sample, typically in liquids. It works by using a flame to atomize a sample, and then measuring the intensity of the emitted light, which is directly related to the concentration of the element being analyzed. The most common elements detected by a flame photometer include alkali metals such as sodium (Na), potassium (K), lithium (Li), and calcium (Ca).

1. Flame Source:

   • The sample is introduced into a flame, typically a combustion flame fueled by a gas such as propane or acetylene, which is mixed with oxygen or air.
   • The heat of the flame causes the sample to atomize, exciting the atoms and causing them to emit light at characteristic wavelengths specific to each element.

2. Nebulizer/Atomizer:

   • The sample is typically introduced into the flame in a fine mist or aerosol form, created by the nebulizer. This ensures even distribution of the sample in the flame for accurate analysis.

3. Monochromator or Optical Filter:

   • A monochromator or optical filters are used to isolate the specific wavelength of light emitted by the element being measured. Each metal emits light at a unique wavelength when excited in the flame. For example:
     • Sodium emits light at a wavelength of 589 nm.
     • Potassium emits light at 766.5 nm.
     • Calcium emits light at 422.7 nm.
   • The monochromator filters out all other wavelengths, allowing only the characteristic light of the target metal ion to pass through to the detector.

4. Photodetector (e.g., Photodiode or Photomultiplier Tube):

   • The emitted light passes through the optical system and reaches a photodetector, which converts the light signal into an electrical signal. The intensity of this signal is proportional to the concentration of the metal ions in the sample.

5. Digital Display and Processing System:

   • The electrical signal generated by the photodetector is processed by the instrument's microprocessor or digital signal processor (DSP). The result is displayed as a digital reading, usually in units of concentration (e.g., parts per million, ppm) on a digital screen.
   • Advanced digital flame photometers can also include features like automatic calibration, data logging, and the ability to measure multiple elements simultaneously.
