Scope

This method is intended for the determination of closed cup flash point of petrolem o o products, their mixtures and other liquids having flash points between 18 Cand 70 C Two methods, namely, method A and method B have been prescribed, method A o o is liquids flashing between 19 C and 70 C inclusive A procedure for determining the closed cup flash point of petroleum products and o mixtures to ascertain whether they give off inflammable vapours below 24 C is also given in appendix B 

Flash Point 

The temperature at which a material give so much vapour that this vapour when mixed with air forms an lgnitable mixture and gives a momentary flash on application of a small pilot flame Outline of the methods : The sample suitable cooled is placed in the cup of the Abel apparatus and heated at a prescribed rate a small test flame is directed into the cup at regular intervals and the flash point is taken as the lowest temperature at which application of the test flame clause the vapour above the sample to ignite with a distinct flash inside the cup

Procedure 

Method ‘A’ : Liquids flashing between-18 C and +18.5 C inclusive. Fill the water bath completely and the air chamber which surrounds the oil cup to a depth of at least 38mm with a 50 : 50 mixture of corrosion inhibited ethylene glycol o (ethanediol) and water. Cool the bath to -27 C or to at least 9oC below the expected flash point of the material being tested which ever is the higher measuring the temperature with the thermometer. A trial flash point determination shall carried out if necessary. While cooling stir the water glycol mixture manually or mechanically or by a tube inserted throughout the thermometer socket and reaching to the bottom of the bath. Replace the tube by the thermometer observing the temperature or the bath.

Cool the sample as received to below 4 C opening the container. Replace the o closure with a cork carrying a thermometer continues. Continue cooling to below-35 C o or to at least 17 C below the expected flash point, which ever the higher. Maintain the sample at this temperature or lower until all flash point tests on the sample are completed.

Place the thermometer in position in the cover of the cup, loosely assemble the cover o o and cup and cool until the thermometer registers-35 C or at least 17 C below the expected flash point, whichever is the higher (See Note). Place the cup in position in the bath, which should be on a firm level surface and replace the thermometer by the oil cup thermometer pour in the sample without undue agitation, avoiding as far as possible the formation of air bubbles, until the level just reaches the point of the index gauge on the wall of the cup. Do not move the apparatus after filling. lgnite the test flame, adjust its size to approx 3.8 mm diameter and maintain it at that size throughout the test, comparing it frequently with the projecting while head mounted on the cover of the oil cup.

Technical Description:

Condensation is a phase change heat transfer process occurring in many industrial applications,such as in steam power plants, refrigeration plants etc. Thus this is one of the important heat transfer process as present in mechanical and chemical engineering applications. The condensation of vapour on a surface is of two types: 1. Drop wise condensation 2. Film wise Condensation. This setup is designed fordetermining heat transfer co-efficient of two types of condensation and for visualization of these processes.It consists of a vertical frame. Condensation tubes are fitted inside compact glass cylinder. Steam generatoris fitted at the backside of the cylinder. Steam comes directly from generator to the cylinder. Two valves are fitted to control flow rate of water in individual tubes. Digital Temperature Indicatormonitors the temperatures. Pressure gauge and Rotameter can observe steam pressure and cold waterflow rates respectively. A Digital temperature Controller is provided for controlling the temperature of Steam. Water level indicator is provided in steam generator. Condensate is measured by a measuring cylinder.

Quadrant Scale for GSM Balance is a simple and quick device which directly indicates the weight per unit area in grams per square meter (GSM) on a sector scale when a sample of selected size is suspended from a clamp fixed to the pointer arm. GSM Balance measures the GSM of fabric, paper, flooring, PVC film and other flexible sheet material. The system is supplied with two templates. The V-Tech GSM Balance is designed to give the weight per unit area of textile fabrics directly. It consists of a quadrant scale calibrated in values of GSM fixed in a vertical plane on a rigid base having provision for levelling. A pointer beam is pivoted on two jewel bearings at the centre point of the scale. A specimen of specified area is cut out from the fabric with the help of either of the two templates provided (or by round cutter) and is suspended on one end of the pointer beam. The weight per unit area is read directly from the quadrant scale.

This test method covers the determination of water in the range from 0 to 25% volume in petroleum products, tars, and other bituminous materials by the distillation method. It is used for determining the water content by heating upto the boiling point of water and than condense that steam with the help of the condeser to get the water content in percentage form.
