Asian handheld oxygen analyzer, which directly displays percentage oxygen on a 31/2 digit liquid crystal display. The mini-oxymeter is equipped with an electrochemical cell as the detector, which is also known as a sensor. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The instrument samples gas by diffusion and powered by a 9V battery that has a ‘low batt’ sign indication. The life of the battery is several hours of continuous use. This manual lays out the setting up and operation of the equipment. The oxygen in the sample gas permeates through the semi permeable membrane into the electrolyte, which are immersed in an electrolyte. The cell delivers a current by consuming the lead of its cathode. Expected service life is about 2 years.

PRECAUTIONS IN USE

The oxygen in the sample gas permeates through the semi permeable membrane into the electrolyte, which is in the cell and after reaching the cathode causes at oxidation-reduction reaction. This reaction creates a minute electric current in the external circuit, which is proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen in the sample gas. The signal is then conditioned and compensated for temperatures finally it is converted to a voltage which is fed to the display. The function of the membrane is multifold it not only controls the rate of permeate oxygen in the cathode and protects the analyzing cell from contamination by the sample gas but prevents the immediate evaporation of electrolyte from the cell. Gases heavily laden with water vapor will not affect the cell as long as the vapor does not condense on the cell membrane surface. Remember water vapor also adds its partial pressure to the total pressure and hence if oxygen percentage is to be measured on dry basis this water vapor should be removed from the gaseous mixture. Any simple means can be used e.g. a cartridge of silica gel placed in the sampling line will adequately suit the purpose.

Experimental Technique

In our experiment the NMR signals of Hydrogen nuclei and Fluorine nuclei are detected. Both have only two possible orientations in reference to static magnetic field H since both have proton spin I = 1/2. The sample is placed in an r.f.coil located between the gap of homogeneous magnetic field H. In order to exactly match equation (3), H is modulated at constant frequency (50Hz in our case) by using two modulation coils. Each time when the matching (resonance) condition (Eq. 3) is fulfilled, energy is absorbed from the r.f.coil due to the spin transition.

Study of Thermoluminescence in alkali halide crystals need creation of F-centres (colour centres) in alkali halide crystals. To produce the F-centres, the crystals are exposed to ionizing radiation which in turn causes the loss of electron from halide ions. An electron then becomes trapped in the halide ion vacancy. The color is the result of the absorption of a photon by the trapped electron and excitation from the ground state to an excited state for the F-center. This is a classic case of particle in a box.

The source of ionizing radiation could be X-rays, electrons, gamma rays etc. These techniques are too Expensive and unaffordable for normal laboratories. Another method, although little less efficient, is by keeping Alkali halide crystals under low pressure, in the proximity of high Voltage. This in turn produces F-centres in the crystals.

This later technique has been adopted in this set up to make it economical and affordable for all laboratories. The setup is complete in itself and can be used straight away.
